David Porter, the creator of Clavis Sinica, is a faculty member at the University of Michigan, where he is affiliated with the Departments of English and Comparative Literature as well as the Center for Chinese Studies. He has been awarded major grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Humanities Center, the Institute for Advanced Study, and the American Council for Learned Societies. He has lived, taught, and studied in China and has published a book called Ideographia on European responses to the Chinese language and culture in the early modern period.
