Getting Started

It's easy to get started reading Chinese with Clavis Sinica. Just follow the four steps below:

  1. Find a Chinese text at an appropriate level on a topic that interests you. Our Chinese
    Voices Project
collection is a great place to start.

  2. Download the Clavis Sinica software. Start up the program, and copy & paste the text
you've selected into the Text Reader Window.

  3. Click on characters you don't know to explore their meanings, pronunciation,
    structure, and usage.

  4. Save the words you have studied to a customized vocabulary list. When you're done,
you can print out your list as a vocabulary review sheet for studying, or test yourself
using the program's built-in flashcards tool.

If you have any trouble with any of these steps, just send us an email--we'll be happy to help!
